Homeowners are supposed to rent only to locals?
Sorry. I do not understand the article below. Basically, it is implied that when it comes to renting out their property, homeowners are supposed to ensure they only rent to locals? If they rent out to foreigners, then it’s not good because then they will turn the neighbourhood into a foreign colony. However, at the moment, this is more of an advice since there are no legal requirement that Malaysian homeowners can only rent out to locals and not foreigners. Do read on and let me know your thoughts, if you also own properties in the areas stated below.
Article in nst.com.my. Homeowners who rent out their properties to foreigners have been identified as a primary factor contributing to certain areas becoming predominantly foreign including illegal immigrants, reports said.
According to Kosmo, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said currently, no restrictions are in place regarding these rental practices, as property owners have the right to rent out their homes as they please.
“If homeowners do not rent out their properties to them (foreigners or illegal immigrants), they would not stay in one area.
“These individuals are also engaged in various activities. This is the reality we have to face.
Amirudin said this in response to the influx of foreigners in Taman Alam Jaya, Puncak Alam, which has led to the neighbourhood appearing like a foreign colony. Do read the article in full here: Article in nst.com.my.
Only rent to foreigners, makes sense?
At the moment, there are no laws prohibiting Malaysians from renting to foreigners. Then again, should such a legislation be in place in the near future? As a home owner, I prefer to rent to Malaysians but if necessary, I certainly would rent out to foreigners and no one can ask me not to rent and continue to let it be empty simply because the area does not have that many locals.
So, if I bought into a wrong area, I should suffer the loss quietly because it’s my fault? Hopefully the solutions in the future involves providing more appropriate housing for foreigners, if there is such a segregation which the authorities would like to see.
There are more Centralised Labout Quarters (CLQs) being built these days. Perhaps this is one of the solutions which will be more appropriate? I think so too, so stay focused and engage the private sector for these CLQs. With a growing economy, I think we will need more foreign workers and we do need a longer term solution too.
