Personal Finance 101: Let’s just talk coffee today

Let’s go mamak / kopitiam daily for coffee

If I buy two cups per day in the local mamak restaurant, then it’s probably RM5 per day or RM150 per month. Depending on the mamak / kopitiam location and also how generous the owner is, this can even be slightly lower than RM4 per day for two cups of kopi-O. That’s just RM120 per month instead of the RM150 which we are talking about.

How low can this really go? IF I just need coffee.

It can be 25 sticks at RM12.19 + RM5 delivery = RM17.20 Divided by 25 sticks means 70 sen per coffee or RM1.40 if two cups per day. Add in hot water (electricity bill and water bill), maybe we add another 10 sen per cup lah. So, RM1.60 per day or RM48 per month only. This is lower than RM120 based on the first example above. Okay, so you really want this to be lower?

Can we go even lower? Really?

RM22.09 + RM5 delivery = RM27.09 and you get 100 sachets. Thus, 30 sen per cup or 60 sen per day. Add in another 20 sen for electricity and water and small teaspoon of sugar (be healthy okay) and it’s RM1 per day. Thus, per month is RM30 for two cups of coffee with little sugar. This is really encouraging lah. Stay healthier and cheaper even if we continue to want to have two cups of coffee every day.

Huh?? You want this to be lower still?

Do-It-Yourself lah. 1kg of coffee powder. Everyday 30-35gm of coffee powder is enough for 2 cups easily. So this bag can last you 30 days. Plus the usual 20 sen per day for the electricity and water and sugar, that’s RM17.50 + RM5 (delivery fee) + RM6 = 28.50. Less than RM1 per day I think is as low as one could get except if we stop drinking coffee.

If we want to do it with style?

We could not hold that cup of coffee from mamak stall everywhere we want to go yeah. The cup is theirs. We also could not hold our coffee in our cup and walk out to go shopping for example. It would look strange. Of course, we could put the coffee into a nice tumbler. However, if we like to hold a branded coffee and show the world that we have style plus money to buy that coffee, then the below are some of the potential spending.

For that US-branded brand, than it would become RM25 per day (two Americanos) or RM750 per month. It’s also possible to go to my favourite brand, ZUS coffee and pay RM6.90 per Americano or RM14 per day for two or RM420 per month.

The above examples from the cheap, cheaper and cheapest ways to drink two cups of coffee per day and also how to do it with more style is to show to you that it’s all about the choices we make and not just how much money we earn per month. We could spend a minimum of RM28.50 per month or we could spend up to RM750 per month just to get two coffee fixes per day. That’s a crazy wow, right?

Happy deciding yeah. Yea, for style, I go for ZUS these days. As for kopi-O, whether SUPER or Sin Sing or even 888, all three are pretty okay and I have tried all before.
